Women's Cancer 1

Volume 9. Women’s Cancer Guide 1, Mostly Breast Cancer

Chapter 1. Breast Health Guide

Breast Care Info

Breast reduction is called Mammoplasty.

A cosmetic breast lift is called a Mastopexy.

The breasts attract many diseases because they contain several glands through which hormones flow as well as fat which absorbs toxins.  Besides breast cancer, there could be nipple discharges, soreness, inverted nipples, nipple dermatitis, itchiness, rash, pain, cyst, etc.

Although it's not conclusive, electromagnetic waves from electronic gadgets could cause damage so don't keep electronic gadgets near your breasts for long periods of time like a cellular phone.

There are many breast symptoms like breast pain, lumps, cysts, nipple discharge and fibrocystic breast disease which don't necessarily lead to breast cancer.  Because estrogen stimulates the growth of cancerous tumors, the recommended lifestyle is to eat high fiber and soy foods because they help rid the body of excess estrogen.

The usual tests are mammography, ultrasound and breast biopsy where they take a little piece out and examine it.  Because the people who read mammograms can make mistakes, it's a good idea to either pick a highly reputable testing center or get a few different tests done.

Macromastia is a genetic condition where women grow breasts that are too big to be comfortable.  You can get a breast reduction for it.

The anti-abortion drug Ru-486 can shrink brain, breast and ovarian tumors.

I-find is a handheld device that uses infrared to help you monitor yourself for breast cancer.

Chapter 2. Breast Cancer Guide

Breast Cancer Info

You can find books about cancer in #616.8 section of your library.  There are also books in the #362.1 section on how to deal with cancer.

The general reasoning behind breast cancer is that poisonous, toxic cells may lodge there and grow based on the amount of estrogen the woman is producing since estrogen tends to cluster in the breast area making everything grow even the poisonous cells.

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women in the U.S.  If it's detected early, breast cancer can be treated to stop it from spreading and eradicate it.

There are risk factors associated with breast cancer:

age

early menstrual periods

family history of breast cancer

gender

late menopause

not having had children

Breast cancer symptoms are usually detectable because of symptoms like lumps, nipple discharge and changes in the shape of the breast.

Women should perform a breast self-exam every month as a way to check for changes in their breasts that may be signs of breast cancer.

Look at your breasts.  Has their size, shape, or texture changed since your last breast exam?  If something is noticeably different, see a doctor to get it checked out.

Feel your breasts for lumps or a thickening of the breast tissue.  Use the fingers of one hand to feel the opposite breast, with the close hand behind your head.  Put your fingers in a circle.  Press in then turn a bit to feel for lumps.  Cover all areas.  Go right up to the underarm.

Squeeze each nipple to check for discharge.  There shouldn't be any.

Try the breast exam both lying down and standing up.

If you do find a lump or a change in your breast, go to a doctor.

In addition to the manual breast exam, women over age 45 should get a mammogram every year or two.

A mammogram is an x-ray of the breast that shows lumps.  If a lump is found then you go to a doctor who takes a little bit of it out (called a biopsy) and does a test to determine if it's cancerous.

If a woman has a cancerous breast lump, there are a variety of treatments like chemotherapy, radiation, lumpectomy (surgical removal of the lump and surrounding cells) or a mastectomy (surgical removal of the entire breast).

Some studies have concluded that use of birth control pills could increase the chances of getting breast cancer.  The American Cancer Society provides free materials on breast self examination.  The general procedure is to look at your breasts in a mirror while standing up, arms outstretched then at the sides.

Next, laying down, start at the outer end of each breast, move in one inch with each circular motion feeling for lumps or any abnormalities.  Squeeze the nipple to see if there's any discharge.  People die from breast cancer.  If there are any irregularities, go to a doctor immediately.

The classification procedure is three pronged, called TNM:

Tumor size.

Node involvement.

Metastasis.

Ask your doctor about your status.  Many people survive breast cancer so don't despair.

Many lumps in the breasts are harmless/ benign.  They may be enlarged lymph nodes or cysts (lumps of fluid) which are not cancerous. a fibroadenoma is a common, benign lump of connective tissue.  Don't immediately panic when you feel lumps.  Get a mammography.

A diet high in fruits and vegetables cuts the risk of breast cancer in half.  The fatter you are, the more your body produces and absorbs Estrogen which is a catalyst for breast cancer.  Red meat is bad.  All processed foods are bad.  Fish is good.  Whole wheat products are good.

Soy products and olive oil have been linked to reducing the incidence of breast cancer.  A little bit of red wine helps cut the incidence of breast cancer and heart disease but too much increases the risk.  Sweet potatoes and strawberries are good.  Exercise helps.  Give yourself regular breast exams.

A drug approved by the FDA, Tamofaxen (brand name Nolvadex), helps to reduce breast cancer by 50% although it has side effects.  It blocks cancerous female hormones from attaching to breast cells.  Another drug is Raloxifene (brand name Evista) which is commonly used to treat osteoporosis.

A big alternative treatment and preventive measure for breast cancer is the use of soy products in your diet.  Soy foods create substances which attach to the receptors in your breasts that carcinogens would otherwise attach to.

A Masectomy is the removal of breast tissue due to cancer.  A Lumpectomy is less invasive.  Plastic surgeons are able to do breast reconstructions.  Other treatments are radiation, chemotherapy and hormone therapy.

A Lymphedema involves the removal of the lymph nodes during a masectomy.

Mammogram/ Mammography Tests For Breast Cancer

A mammogram is a safe, low-dose x-ray picture of the breast.  A mammogram can find breast cancer that is too small for you, your doctor or nurse to feel during regular physical breast exams.  If you find breast cancer early, it is easier to treat.

Mammograms work on older, menopausal women better because the breast is fatter then and you can see tumors better than on young women so mammograms aren't that effective on young women.  Feel your breasts yourself and find another method.

About half of all new cases of breast cancer are in women aged 65 and older but two out of three women aged 65 and older do not get regular mammograms.  The risk of getting breast cancer increases as you grow older.  Women with dense breasts should ask about getting an ultrasound in addition to the mammogram which could miss a tumor if there is one.

Cancer can show up at any time so one mammogram is not enough.  A screening mammogram is done when you and your doctor think your breasts are completely healthy.

It is important to return for a screening mammogram every two years if you are 65 or older.  If you find a lump or see other changes in your breasts, see your doctor right away.

To do the mammogram, you'll stand in front of a machine.  The person who takes the x-rays will place your breast between two plastic plates.  The plates will press your breast and make it flat.  You will have x-rays taken of one breast at a time.  It takes only a few seconds to get a breast x-ray.

You can get a mammogram at hospitals, clinics, imaging x-ray centers and mobile units.  To lawfully perform either screening or diagnostic mammograms, a facility must be certified by the FDA and must display its FDA certificate.  If it doesn't, it's a sham operation.

Medicare covers screening mammograms for the early detection of breast cancer.  You do not need a doctor's order to get a screening mammogram.  For women aged 65 and older, Medicare covers one screening mammogram every two years.

For women who are younger than age 65 and are covered by Medicare, the age and risk of the patient determine how often screening mammograms should be done.

Medicare does not cover screenings for women under age 35.  Medicare covers diagnostic mammograms when you show any signs of breast disease.  If you are on Medicare, diagnostic mammograms are covered when your doctor orders them, no matter what your age.

Assuming you have met your Medicare Part B deductible, your out of pocket cost should be less than $25.  If you have supplemental insurance such as a Medigap policy or Medicaid, you may have no out of pocket costs.

If you belong to an HMO, the only cost to you is your plan's copayment which should be $10 or less.

An alternative to mammography is Thermal Imaging/ Infrared Imaging which finds the heat caused by the increased blood vessels leading to tumors.  There are also Digital Mammograms, Ultrasound and MRIs.

A company called Biofield is using electrical patches put on the breast to test for lesions without needing any radiation.  For safety sake, get both a mammogram and another type of test done.

There are now possible new tests like a breath test.

Masectomy/ Surgical Removal of the Breast

Mastectomy is the medical term for the surgical removal of one or both breasts, either partially or completely.  A masectomy is often done to get rid of breast cancer.

After a masectomy, a woman (or a man in some cases) can get a breast reconstruction by a cosmetic surgeon if they can afford it or wear prosthetic devices (falsies).

Before you get a masectomy, you should get a second opinion both to verify your breast cancer and to determine if it's big enough to waarant a masectomy.  There have been medical malpractice cases filed by women who have gotten masectomies who didn't really need them.

There are several different types of mastectomy like a simple masectomy, a radical masectomy, a segmental resection, a partial masectomy, a double masectomy or a lumpectomy.

Breast Reconstruction Info

You get a breast or both reconstructed after you lose it through surgery to remove breast cancer.  The surgery is called a masectomy.  The breasts are rebuilt using autologous tissue or prosthetic material to construct a natural-looking breast.

Some cosmetic surgeons do this, some don't.  it's not the same as breast implants.  It requires more expertise.

Cervical Cancer Websites

Cervical cancer accounts for about six percent of all cancers in women. Cancerous cells develop in the uterine cervix, the connecting passage between the uterus and vagina.

The human papillomaviruses (HPV) cause most cervical cancers.

The peak ages of cervical cancer is between 33 to 40 but young women can get it too.

Pap smear tests may detect abnormal cells in the cervical tissues before cancer develops.

Symptoms of cervical cancer may include:

vaginal bleeding.

Endometrial/ Uterus Cancer Websites

Endometrial cancer is a situation where the endometrium, the inner lining of the uterus/ womb, is toxic.

It is the most common gynecological cancer.

It makes up about fifteen percent of all cancers in women.

A risk factor is estrogen-replacement therapy.  Estrogen replacement

therapy lowers the risk of heart disease so it’s a trade-off.

Symptoms can be:

pelvic pain

bloody discharge

Gestational trophoblastic tumors (GTT) are rare cancers where abnormal cells grow in the uterus after the mother gives birth.

Most GTTs are benign and do not spread.

Some types can become malignant and spread.

The main types of gestational trophoblastic tumors are:

hydatidiform mole/ molar pregnancy; the sperm and egg have joined but the tissues develop into a cyst

choriocarcinoma, begins from a hydatidiform mole or from the remains in the uterus after a baby is born.

placental-site trophoblastic disease, the area of the uterus where the placenta was attached.
