Chapter 2. Benefits/ Help in General

Government Benefits in General

Some people need welfare, food stamps and housing from time to time.  I'm not saying government assistance and welfare are bad but it keeps you in a dependent state of mind and the bureaucracy behind it is meant to demean you and keep you in your place while wasting a lot of your time going through the bureaucratic shuffle to get it.  Nevertheless some people need it if they don't want to be homeless and desperate.

I say use the government if you must for temporary assistance but never lose hold of the fact that you alone create your own life.

The first thing about all types of government benefits is finding out they exist which is not easy.  Most people have no idea of what types of benefits and programs there are out there.

The second thing about government benefits is that you don't automatically get them just because you lose your job, turn 65 or have a baby.  You have to apply for them.

The third thing about government benefits is that they are administered by bureaucrats who do everything by the book so your application form has to have everything filled in properly and you have to meet all their criteria no matter how trivial some of it is.

If, for whatever reason, they deny your claim, ask them about the appeal process.  Virtually all programs administered by the state and federal government have some kind of appeal process for a denial of an application claim for benefits.

socialservicenetwork.com

Temporary Aid to Needy Families (TANF) is a federal program administered by the states as a form of welfare to work concept to temporarily help poor families get training and into decent jobs.

The general concept is five years of benefits maximum.  Within two years of starting benefits, the recipient must be either training for work or working a job.

States run this program through their family services or children services office.  There a standards of poverty in order to qualify.  You can't have too many assets.

Look up government agencies in your local phonebook.

NGOs are non-governmental nonprofit organizations (charities) set up to help people.  The easiest way to find out about them is to ask knowledgeable homeless and poor people about social assistance programss.  Many are religious.

Food banks are very popular.  Clothing banks are too.  Some NGOs even go so far as to offer employment training and jobs.  Every locality has a different mix of these NGOs depending the altruistic people who live there.

If you're really down and out, go to a homeless shelter, talk to the people there about assistance programs in the area.

Chapter 4. Social Help Organizations

Government Help/ NGO Social Services

The food stamp program is a federal program run by the U.S. Department of Agriculture who gives money to state governments who administer it locally.

If you are an American citizen, earn less than x amount of dollars in a year and have very few assets, you qualify.  You get a food stamp credit card worth x amount of dollars per month which you can use to buy food at supermarkets and grocery stores.

You have to apply, bring in supporting documents and be interviewed in person.  Go to the website or phonebook, find the address for your local food stamp office and go from there.

If you have more than $2,000 in assets, which is about the value of any used car, you probably will not be eligible.  You can own a house, have a 401(k), a burial plot, receive supplemental security income benefits or state cash assistance programs because these are all exempt from being counted as assets.

They are now using an electronic benefits transfer (EBT) card where stores debit your food stamp account directly.  In the past when they gave out food stamps in bills like cash, there was a lot of fraud.  Some people even traded them for drugs and booze.  Some store owners bought them for 50% of the face value.

Food stamps can only be used for food and seeds to grow food.  They can't be used for fast food from restaurants.

If you are in an emergency food situation, they will give you some emergency food stamps before your application is processed if you go to the food stamp office and talk to them.

The phone number for the local food stamp office is in the government section of the phone book.

There is a federal Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) that was set up to provide low-income mothers with healthy food for their children.  It is run by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).  The standards are similar to the food stamps program.  You have to prove you're poor.

Food and Nutrition Service

fns.usda.gov.

The USDA also administers a Hot Lunch Program through schools which provides  low-income children with healthy food.

Every locality has a different mix of these NGOs depending on the altruistic people who live there.

If you're really down and out, go to a homeless shelter, talk to the people there about assistance programs in the area.

You'll find social help information at your local library in the #360-369 section or HV91.

Social Assistance Websites

Every state government and some county and municipal governments have a Social Services office where they help people in need.

Social Services includes housing help, welfare money, health and dental care, employment services, mental health counselling and a referral to food banks.  Food stamps is a federal program.

U.S. Social Security helps if you're disabled and contributed to it.

There are churches and secular charities that help people.

If you need things like drugs and glasses, I cover this in my medical book.

If you're older, try your state senior, elderly or aging office for social programs.

In some areas, dialing 211 gets you health and social service directory assistance.  As far as I know this is run by United Way.

American State Governments by States

Many cities, counties and states have licensing requirements, therefore licensing boards and trade/ professional organizations.  Some consider their lists to be public domain so the public has access to these records.

If you're looking for public records, there are several other offices in the state system that could help you with your search such as fishing/ hunting licenses, state prison locator service, bankruptcy courts, worker compensation records, state parent locators, libraries, etc.

Your state government has a department for just about everything.  There is a book called the National Directory of State Agencies at #353.9 at your local library which lists all the addresses and phone numbers or you could buy it if you want.

Chapter 5. Finding Social Service Organizations

Social Service Organizations/ Community Organizations

A service club is a nonprofit organization where members perform charitable works either by direct hands-on efforts or by donating money and supplies.

Many social service organizations have chapters at colleges.  Go to your local college websites and look up clubs and organizations.

You can find social service organizations listed on your municipal/ local city/ town website.

Go to local and regional chamber of commerce websites and general community websites to look for social service organizations.

Because social service organizations in general don't have a lot of money, you don't see many local, regional or state websites created solely to list the social service organizations in the local area.  Even the government doesn't list them.

State governments list nonprofits through the Secretary of State (state corporation licensing office) but many nonprofits are not social service organizations.

Some of the big volunteer websites have lists of local social service organizations like:

volunteermatch.org

helping.org

1-800-volunteer.org

americaspromise.org

avso.org, assn. of voluntary service organizations.

beyondtourism.com

charityvillage.com

charityguide.org/volunteer

Try telephone directories like yellowbook.com.

Go to the Social Services section at the library, #362, namely #362.1 and #362.4 (disabilities) which will have books that will actually deal with the psychological-spiritual and nuts and bolts aspects on how to live better with a problem in life.

General Service Practical Information Organizations

The following organizations are generally in the business of offering services, usually in the form of information or help over the phone or by sending you information.  They come in two categories; the nonprofit, altruistic types who are out there to help people and business types, who will sell you some information that you can probably use to make money or save money.

You will find general service information at your local library in the #360-369 section.

360.  Welfare and Association.

361.  Organization of social welfare.

362.  Services to special groups.

363.  Other services.

364.  Criminology.

365.  Prison system.

366.  Associations.

367.  Social clubs.

368.  Insurance.

369.  Other associations.

Beyond that, the easiest way to get information about anything is to ask the librarian to borrow a periodical directory like the Standard Periodical Directory or Ulrich's Periodical Directory which neatly list virtually every magazine and journal out there in America in clear categories.Get the addresses and get the magazines.  Magazines are a great wealth of resource information to help network you into more leads for whatever topic you're studying.

If you need additional assistance, call the Toll Free Operator at 800-555-1212.  You might try the AT&T Toll Free Directory at the library.

There's also the nonprofit helping agency called Guideposts at 800-233-0773, guideposts.org with a service called Guideposts Find.  They're a Christian agency who will help you in your search for the right service/ information number.  Just remember that most of these are live lines with a real person there so try to call during regular business hours.
